Key findings

In the opinion of Bloor Research the following represent the key facts of which prospective users should be aware:

  • There is no need to install new networks for this solution; it uses existing network architectures that most organisations will have in place; a really good thing in keeping the costs down.
  • Ubisense have developed as part of their R&D a number of demonstrable scenarios which capture the imagination and take the viewer into seeing new possibilities for the use of RFID and RTLS solutions. This shows the innovativeness and agility of the company.
  • The accuracy of the read distance is impressive when compared to many rival WiFi based RTLS solutions. So, if accuracy of location is important then Ubisense is certainly a product to consider.
  • From the demonstrations that Bloor saw the developer tool appears easy to use and the simulator is impressive; although not quite to same degree as GlobeRanger’s capability.
  • The relationship with Microsoft could be very interesting. At present Ubisense are the only RTLS solution that interfaces with the Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 R2 RFID components. This opens great opportunities of working with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and machine tool vendors whose products are based on the Microsoft Windows platform.

The bottom line

The Ubisense RTLS solution is very impressive. Organisations looking at RTLS should consider the significantly higher accuracy and reliability that Ultra Wide Band (UWB) can provide for a modest additional investment over other solutions. Bloor strongly suggests that Ubisense’s product should be on the evaluation lists of prospective RTLS buyers.
